Then there's lots of scenes of Reed lying around smoking and reading. "I tell you something Luce, you're as good as a man to have around here," Reed tells Donohoe at one point as they are trudging upriver. Once they get to the island there's an awful lot of scenes of the couple making completely inane conversation interspersed with completely unabashed shots of Donohoe with nothing - or very little - on. "Mind you, I suppose a nurse could be useful!" "Give me a woman who can cook, sew and fish," he leers. Reed's attempt to chat up his would-be wife in a posh restaurant while guzzling wine is hilarious and so politically incorrect it hurts. Why do they always have to be French? What's wrong with a good old British tart?" The point of this, apart from creating a great deal of excitement amongst teenage boys, is not quite clear. The original film, also named Castaway, features a half-naked Oliver Reed stalking about on a desert island with a usually naked Amanda Donohoe stomping about after him. ![]() (Photo by Cannon Film Distributors/Getty Images) (Image: Cannon Film Distributors/Getty Images)īut back in the mid-1980s there was a completely different proposition of a Castaway film that lived long in the minds of generations of schoolboys.
